3D Printed Pillboxes

I printed up some Warmachine-style terrain on my new 3D printer, one for myself and a few for my local game store.

This one is pretty dark and drab.  Primed with 50/50 Metallic and Black Primer.  Grey parts first covered with cheap craft paint, then tinted with miniature paints.  Printed with PLA on “High” resolution – .12mm layers.

These ones were primed with just Metallic Primer, the grey is a different color of craft paint, and the bottom is red/blue miniature paint.  The red one was printed with PLA at “Hyper” resolution – .05mm layers, and the blue one with ABS at High, but with a thin coat of gap-filling resin over most of it.

Kitty (Better Pictures)

Original post here

Kitty won a high silver at ReaperCon 2018.  Some of the high points the judges pointed out were use of colors in the shadows and the freehand on the pants.  I now know what I need to do to achieve Gold – spend plenty of time on it, ask better painters for advice and humbly accept it, and iterate multiple times.  Many thanks to Cathy Wappel who was seated at my table at ReaperCon 2017 and gave me lots of good suggestions and advice.  Rhonda Bender was also extremely helpful.  Also thanks to the other people at the table (Charity and… Adam?).

Weak points (for my future reference): the gun’s highlights.  Her gloves are too close in color to the guns.  Her hair needs to go all the way (or nearly all the way) to white, in a “halo”.

Kitty

I started working on Kitty about 2 years ago. I decided to bring her along to ReaperCon where I got in the zone with her and finished her off. Lots of greens and yellows, but it’s all centered around P3 Wurm Green, which is mixed into nearly everything. (I think I had just bought a pot of it right when I first started the mini). Helpful suggestions from other attendees and teachers (Cathy Wappel and Rhonda Bender in particular) definitely improved the quality. The base material is from a tub of stuff I received from Frontline Games in my swag bag.

50321: Wild West Missionary

I picked this guy up at ReaperCon a few years ago, got him to about 90% then left him for a while.  I wanted to do NMM on the gun barrels, but decided that enough was enough and finished him while on vacation last month.

My favorite part is the crazy eyes.  Usually black dot in white is wrong, but here it’s right 🙂
