July 4th Paint Day

I had some friends over for the 4th and we painted some minis!  Well, they painted minis and I advised.

The first row contains Ninja All-Stars chibis from Remy (8), Laurean (adult), and Avi (5)

The second row is Chris, Alicia and Adam (all adults)

AFAIK, none of them have painted minis before.  Laurean is an artist though, and it shows.

Ninja All-Stars Clan Kitsune chibi ninja dude

A chibi ninja from Ninja All-Stars that I painted up.  I don’t play the game, but I got a chance to pick up a box for cheap and figured there’s at least a few minis in there I would like to paint eventually.  The rest make nice gifts.

Breachstorm Proxies: Black Diamond and IMEF Troopers

Breachstorm (http://www.breachstorm.com/) is a new skirmish game a friend of my is making. I had a chance to play a short demo game, and I plan on playing a few more times before it hits Kickstarter, when I get a free Saturday. One of the factions (Homeworld Confederacy) is a somewhat generic space marine faction, so I decided to paint up a bunch of my dudes that were just sitting around. When the Kickstarter comes, I am most interested in the race of Lion dudes.

The original plan was to rely primarily on the airbrush, but I ended up throwing a wash and dry brushing medium grays, then edge highlighting in white gray. Still, didn’t take too much time.

Diamond Corps (Relic Knight, Black Diamond faction)
material: injection molded PVC plastic
I will use these guys as Homeworld Confederacy Riflemen and Fire Team Leader

Diamond Corps Medic (Relic Knight, Black Diamond faction)
material: spin-cast resin
The camera did not like the all-blue shot of just the shield and dramatically shifted the color. I would like to get a DSLR one day, but I don’t take $500+ worth of photos.
she doesn’t have a role in Breachstorm, but I wanted to paint up this model at the same time as the other Diamond Corps models

CSM Alex-117 (Relic Knight, Black Diamond faction)
material: spin-cast resin
He will play the role of Capt. Johan Lukas

IMEF: Reggie Van Zandt (Reaper Miniatures, Bones Chronoscope)
material: injection molded PVC plastic (Bones)
Reggie will be used as a Support Gunner for a Fire Team

Questing Knight Princess Malya and Mr. Tomm

The first of the new resin minis from Soda Pop Miniatures that I got my hands on, Princess Malya is a beautiful sculpt and fun to paint.  I agonized over the last little bit, and between never getting to play Relic Knights and this model’s rules being garbage, she slept on the shelf of shame, waiting for her Prince Charming to show up.  I finally finished her off last month, so she can join Mr. Tomm, who’s been done for a year now.

In case the inspiration isn’t obvious, I’ve based her paint job on Alice from Disney’s Alice in Wonderland.  The base is one of my favorite parts, and I love how it came out – you can even see a bit of reflection in some shots.  I definitely got fed up with the dress at points, and just had to leave it in order to move on, but overall am fairly happy.  The white in particular, I probably could have redone it using some of the tips from Jen Greenwald’s class that I took last year.

Darkspace Hasami

Finished off Darkspace Hasami.  She’s a character from Soda Pop Miniature’s Relic Knights game.  This is the cosplay version of Hasami who works for an alternate faction, in this case, the Noh Empire.  The costume is based off Ryuko Matoi’s battle outfit from Kill la Kill (a very weird anime).  The connection is that regular Hasami (hasami means “scissors” in Japanese) uses a giant pair of scissors, and Ryuko uses a “scissor blade,” which is half of a giant pair of scissors (a scissor?).  I had to watch a few episodes to learn that and figure out what was even going on with her outfit.

The miniature is in the new resin material, which I think is produced by Prodos Games.  It’s definitely superior to the PVC they were using before, but is not without its faults.  I painted the majority of the miniature at ReaperCon 2016, using the limited edition MSP Ghostly Moss.  Other dominant colors are P3 Coal Black, MSP Clear Magenta, VGC Purple Ink and MSP Olive Skin Triad.  A special shout-out to Adrift, who suggested the MSP Clear Magenta (he described it as Victoria’s Secret Pink) for her panties which looked so great I used it in a bunch of other spots as well.  I had a fun time getting a nice smooth blend on the scissors, but am not usually interested in spending that much time on minis.
